CDM- 347 Lighting techniques for camera - Analysis task
The Conjuring -

At the start of this scene we open on the main protagonist house where they are looking around trying to find the source of a noise she can hear the way they show the noise is by clapping in different parts of her house which is already building up the tension as clapping can only be made by a human or by something moving with force which means something is not right. I think the way they would of added in the sound for this scene would have been in two different ways and this could be that it was done on set or it could of been added in over the top as a sound effect. Other elements of sound they have used to there advantage is using low keys on a keyboard to create a eerie affect they also use this type of music to build up the scene they have also used creaking on the stairs, doors and chairs to build up the tension for the dramatic part of the scene putting the audience on the each of there seats as something is making that sound that sound. An effective way sound as been used in this scene is by having music loud sound effect played at parts of action to scare the audience by increasing their heart rate.
Moving onto camera movement which is a key element in this scene as it has been done in a way which makes you think that you are there such as having a tracking shot from behind which carries on throughout the start of the scene. Carrying on through the scene we begin to hear sounds of the door opening which is shot really well as you hear the door first but then see the door just finish opening which is a slow pan which creates a dramatic affect of expecting something to be there, they carry on using this through the scene. One thing I really really like is on time mark 49 second to 60 second and how they use lighting and the camera to transition one place to another which works really well in the scene. They also use static camera movements looking something as you know something is going to happen or move and using faster camera movements on parts of action to build up the tension.

At the start of the scene they have used a very low key lighting with only a couple of lighting sources coming from a lighting stand and ceiling light. They also use no lighting as a way of bringing in a person by focusing them into a place of unknown. Also having a single light source so that it creates a silhouettes of the main person making it look more spooky.
Annabelle -

At the start of this scene we open with a long shot a mother putting her child to sleep when she hears noise coming from her child's room. In this scene they have made uses of audio in a really good way as they have used elements such as having banging and creaking coming from her child's room which makes her go in but also make the audience curious and also allows to build up tension. They also build tension really well as they have doors slamming by themselves and scary eerie music which builds it up as a whole by putting people on the each of there seats.
The camera movements and angles work really well with this scene as they have lots of different camera angles and shot which work well such as, having a static camera shot of Annabelle rising out of the back as she turns round then a fast push in to see her face which is dramatic reveal for everyone. Another thing I like the use of is the how they switch back and forward between shot which i think is really good way of building up tension. The lighting in this scene is low key but has a couple of normal lighting sources such as natural lighting coming from the window but also a couple of lamps. A way they make use of the lighting is by contrasting shadows under the door to make it seem someone is outside the door and that Annabelle is coming.

Picture recreation
In this task we recreated shots from films to see how accurate we could get them to the original.

Original

recreation

In this picture we used 2 normal LED panel lights with red gels to get that red background in a very dark environment we also used a cardboard cut out of a knife so that we could get that knife silhouette we also had the low exposure on the camera so that we could keep it darker and not so bright. we also used a whiteboard with a black cloth over the top to get the black silhouette wall.

recreation
In this lighting recreation we used a big tv screen to project the background on so that we could get that out of focus background with 2 LED panel lights with orange gels on to high light the left side of my face to match the original. If i was to do this one again I would try to dim the light a bit more so it doesn't cast such a hard shadow on the other side of my face but this process still work very well.

Original

recreation

This picture recreation we had someone stood above the person laying down with a white lighting to create the shadow on the right side of the face but also high light the other side this light was just a LED panel with no gel but just turned very white.
Camp fire recreation

lightning recreation

lighting set up -

In this scene we used a very basic lighting set up as it was just a mix of warm and LED lights with orange gels on them to create the fire affect, with some lights slightly dimd.
lighting set up -

In this scene we used a LED light with a no gel on just turned really cold with the light being turned on and off in a very dark location.
Being arrested recreation

lighting set up -

In this scene we had it start of dark and then had are actor run away as we took the camera and lights closer to her till she stopped the lights we used were the little LED light with a police mode already on which was easier and they flashed blue and red lights we also use a flash light to seem like police as if we had ran after them in the dark
