Script Breakdown

For this scene above our group wanted use blood gels, and fake blood to show Sids death like described  in the script above when Sid notices his own corpse

For this scene we wanted to show who Max looking eerie with bags under his eyes and pale skin a little dead skinned, flaky in places. (These makeup scenes  applies to scene two above 3 below )

Hair application

For this production we experimented with hair and makeup , we had to sit still whilst hair was applied to our faces, to make it stick we had to use spirit gum. Once the glue was applied we had to wait a few minutes for it to settle in, then to add the hair prosthetics. When placing in on you don't want to dab it on, you more of place realistically where the hair was to going grow and lightly place it in position, not adding to much pressure. the hair being added  can make the actor look, older, create a prominent appearance of the character, and even creating hair that is appropriate  for the characters setting time periods and the style of production .

For straight makeup as a group we had to make the person have a natural look with no alteration to be made. i think whilst doing this task we did better than expected for never doing makeup before, but the only problem is it came out a little too dark which made the makeup look a little tanned in a way. the colour came out a little bronze, whilst blending in the foundation on Leo's however when our group worked on Harry's face it didn't look much different. Before applying anything we need wipe the face down, sort of cleansing the face getting rid of bacteria or excess dirt then when your face is dry we started blending the face and neck with foundation, just sort of highlighting and shadowing the features. for shadowing the tones need to be five shades dark than the foundation you applied and with highlighting five shades lighter.

      Aging Makeup

makeup design .jpeg

Beauty makeup

For beauty makeup  we started by cleansing down the face getting rid of excess dirt making sure the face was fresh and clean to build the appearance on. next after the face was dry and ready to work we brushed the entire face with foundation sort of adding it as a mask to what we would apply on top, we started contouring adding more definition to the face, sculpting in places such as the cheek bones to create the illusion of looking slimmer, then from a makeup palette we applied  the pink over the eyelids and under the eyes blending down to give that pink stain look that comes down to the cheeks

For Aging makeup we first had to clean the face with moisturiser, making it clear from dry and oiliness. Once the face was clear to work on, we applied a primer which went under the makeup which  we  would apply on top, that gave the persons complexion a natural skin tone.

We started making slight details with a darker colour brushing under the eyes, nose, cheekbones, chin and the jawline. This made the skin possibly look a little frail in places which started to build the person into character.

We then added frown lines across the forehead with a  small brush over the existing lines on head, for this part we also drew lines in the creases of the mouth creating sort of folds in-between. with Aging your actor i think one of the most important thing for making your character older is the skin, and adding wrinkles on the side of the eyes . with a brush we then applied a lighter colour making a pale complexion and sort of highlighting the frown lines.  Just the faintest bit which doesn't take much add white paint over eye brows and hair to create grey strands of hair and with eye brows colour dying turning a white colour.

The ways to achieve more of a dramatic form of aging effect, you can use gelatine and prosthetics to create more of a droopy or saggy effect on the skin around the face.

Finger Moulding

Finger moulding was an interesting challenge we had to work on  as  a group. First we had melted gelatine (it is formed from partial hydrolysis, of collagen extracted from the skin which comes from tissue of animals)we  had used alginate in a plastic cup for the mould, when the alginate  it goes pink and when it is has  dried it turns white which means  it is ready to use, it the water in the mould had to be the right temperature for it  and then carefully you break away the alginate around the gelatine mould  and it will be ready to form, with the finishing touches you can blend the finger to make it have a realistic skin  tone and then it is formed and like like the photos above  where we added fake blood  at the end of the mould looking like blood is pouring out of it .

We blended the mould with foundation, to make the finger look realistic, we applied it brushing a coat of makeup on first as a mask the layered it with a makeup palette creating a sort of white fair tone.

Health and safety evaluation

As a makeup artist the primary responsibility is to enhance the beauty of actors while ensuring a safe and healthy working environment. This involves not only the application of cosmetics but also potential risks associated with the products and techniques used. mainly when applying services such as acrylic nails.

responsibilities of a makeup artist:

1 actor consultation:  through consultations to understand any allergies, skin, sensitivities, or medical conditions, that may affect product application.

2. product knowledge: stay informed about the ingredients in products used, including potential allergies and irritants. This includes knowledge of of makeup, skincare, and nail products.

3.:   sanitation and hygiene: Maintain a high standard of of cleanliness by sanitising tools, brushes, and workspaces, to prevent any cross contamination infections.

4: safe product usage: products according to to manufacture guidelines, ensuring actors are aware of the risks associated with certain products that may effect them, especially those containing strong chemicals.

5. emergency preparation: be prepared to handle any allergic reactions or other emergencies by keeping a first aid kit nearby and how to respond to these reactions effectively.

Risks with Acrylic nails

1; chemical exposure - the application of acrylic nails involves using products that contain methacrylate compounds, which can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions or respiratory issues if inhaled. Nail adhesives and solvents can release volatile organic compounds ( VOC) leading to to long term health effect's.

2 infection risks- improper application or removal of acrylic nails can lead to natural nail damage which can increase risks of infections

3 fumes and ventilation - the use of aerosols sprays and products that emit strong fumes requires adequate ventilation to reduce inhalation risks . Ensure that the work space i ventilated to minimize exposure to harmful chemicals.

4 skin reactions- some clients may experience allergic reactions to acrylic materials or other nails products, leading to redness welling or even itching.  Be careful of actors who may have sensitive skin , which could worsen product application.

5: physical injuries- improper handling of tools such as nail files, clippers, or drills, can lead to cuts  or injuries for both the artists and the actors

when on shoot we used eyeshadow and foundation we also used blood gels and fake blood applied on out character Sid. From the knowledge i have learnt over this topic i think it would of been interesting using solvents and acrylic nails to experiment what would work on our film, i think what would of been interesting would be applying the gelatine wounds to make the head injury more realistic, showing the gash and blending it in to Max's Natural skin tone . In the future from the knowledge i have learnt i will now know what materials work and how to use them in a safe and hygienic way.

These designs are exactly  how we wanted to make Sids description. The appearance we wanted from Sid was for him to look pale, a feature where it looked like he hadn't gotten any sunlight. For this feature we created, we powder the entire face with foundation and the blended white as layer to the face to give him unhealthy look. The next part of Sids appearance was to create bags under his eyes, showing that he doesn't get much sleep and sort of create eerie presence, we created this look with creating dark shadows with thin pencil under the eyes with a makeup sponge gently brushing it in creating that darkness making his look more strange.

BTS

These are a couple of photos of us as a group applying the makeup  To max, for this scene with used fake blood to make the wound look like a head injury,

whilst on shoot we kept Max safe on set by doing a patch test making sure it was safe to apply makeup on max, we didn't use any prosthetics to max's face  because we had what we needed for our role as Sid and also there were no risks with acrylic nails or  finger moulds as we did not use them with the makeup we already knew max wasn't allergic to the makeup as we asked before applying

makeup on set

This unit required us to use makeup for our film, in are group there were two crucial scenes where we needed makeup, the bathroom scene where Sid is killed, and when Sid shows his morning routine. The look we wanted to give Sid\Max was a  sort hermit, his character does not go out and has a lack of sunlight, which shows his unnatural skin tone and bags under his eyes, making him look ill. The way we created this look with makeup, was wiping the face making it clean to apply on, then once dry you add Foundation brushing whole face, as layer to mask what you would apply on top, once it blended in we added another of white over the foundation to blend with skin tone creating a lighter tone making him look pale and unwell, then under eyes we brushed under eyelids to create bags and with this effect it brought out his true character of the look we wanted for Sid.
