Short Film Post-Production
(Fiction)
Continuing on from CDM 354: Short Film Production, it is now time to start sorting through the footage and begin editing our horror films. Before this, though, we were tasked with creating a video essay listing and describing different transitions that can be found in movies and tv shows. This video had to be 5-10 minutes long, with a voice-over, and transition examples from films as well as ones created ourselves. My video ended up being around 6 minutes long, which I edited myself, and included all of these elements.
VIDEO ESSAY
With this task complete, it was time to begin editing the horror film. I would be editing my group's short horror film called 'COPYCAT', about a young woman called Molly who stays at an Airbnb and discovers a monster called the 'Mimic', who is slowly becoming a physical copy of her. We originally planned for this short film to be around 8 minutes long, however in the end, it only resulted in being 5 minutes long in total.
POST-PRODUCTION WRITE UP
I began by creating an offline edit. An offline edit is a very simple edit, where the footage is cut together in the right order, to define the pacing and general storyline of the film. However, any details such as the sound, music, colouring, title cards and credits are not yet applied. It is simply to help portray what is happening and how each shot will be cut together, without worrying about extra touches. This offline edit became the base for the online edit later on.
OFFLINE EDIT
Once the offline edit was complete, I moved onto my online edit. This was where I began to apply the music I wanted, added the title and credits, and began figuring out how I wanted my film to look visually by playing around with colour.
