PAST PREPARATION RECAP
As part of the previous unit, we were tasked with presenting short elevator pitches about two ideas I had for the subject of my portrait documentary. These elevator pitches had to last a minute and a half each, totalling three minutes. I presented my short pitches to one of my course tutors, and they then gave me feedback on which idea they felt I should go forward with.
The two options for documentary subjects was my dad and my grandfather. I then explained my reasons behind choosing them. My first option was my grandad. He was in the army for the early years of his adult life, and went on to create a business importing plants and selling them to wholesale companies such as garden centres. I wanted to find out more about his experience in the army, how it affected his life and family, as well as depicting what his life is life currently. Unfortunately, my grandfather is not as local as I would have liked. He lives a couple hours away. However, it is not totally impossible. If I did create this documentary, I intended for the piece to be inspirational and emotional. My second option was my dad. He is a traditional Māori Tā Moko (tattoo) Practitioner from New Zealand. I wanted to ask him more about his practice, and how living in a different country affects him and his work. He is much more local and available compared to my first option, making filming much easier. This piece would be educational and inspiring. In the end, I decided to move forward with the idea of creating a portrait documentary on my dad. This conclusion was reached through both my tutor's advice, and my own preference.
After this, I created a more detailed pitch for my chosen subject. I collected all the information needed in a preparation document, then created a slides presentation to pitch to one of my course tutors.
