Unit 8
Final Major Project

cuts explanation video

I am going to be editing a short horror film about Felix, a 16/17 year old boy who is studying for his exams late at night. He is left alone by his older sister (who we never see her face) for half an hour as she goes to the shops. He is shown to be in extreme stress but takes a small break to let the cat out. As he is letting the cat out he scans the garden believing that he hears/sees something there but quickly gives up on knowing what it is and goes back inside to continue revising. As he continues revising he can feel a presence watching him, he quickly turns around to try and find the reason for his feelings but finds nothing. when he starts to get creeped out, Felix decides to go round the house and make sure there's nothing there, picking up some scissors as self defence. Felix heads towards the stairs as he slowly walks up them, trying to keep quiet. Once he gets to the upstairs hallway he makes his way toward the first door (which is just a cupboard) and quickly opens it. Finding nothing there he moves on to the bathroom slowly opening the door to the bathroom whilst turning the light on. Seeing nothing there he lets out a sigh and walks towards the sink. Felix tells himself in the mirror that there's nothing there and goes to splash water on his face before going still by hearing a loud bang in his bedroom. Now extremely scared Felix slowly makes his way to his bedroom before slowly pushing the door open and scrambling to find the light. Once he gets the light on he sees nothing there but decides to grab the bat from next to his wall and move onto the last room. Now holding the bat up to protect himself he slowly walks towards the last room and opens the door. Turning the light on he sees nothing but continues to slowly move around the room. We can see that something is watching him from a blind spot as he searches for the creature. Suddenly he gets a loud phone call from his sister asking about the shops. After the call Felix starts to calm down as she says that she'll be home soon so he won't be alone. After the phone call he decided to go downstairs and continue studying but without his headphones when he suddenly felt the creature stroke the back of his neck. This is the first time that the creature actually touches him and this makes him jump up looking around in fear as he sees nothing there. He drops the bat whilst trying to grab it causing him to have to bend down to get it. When he gets back up he notices something in the mirror. He slowly walks towards the mirror keeping the bat up in front of him. A blurry figure/creature appears behind him in the mirror, chanting his name at him. The audience can hear a muffled voice saying his name and then suddenly a hand is placed on top of his shoulder. Believing that it is the creature Felix swings the bat round ready to attack the thing however we see the bat swing straight into his sister's skull. The film ends with the bat going into her head.

offline edit

i started by uploading all my clips and audio onto my computer and placing them in a separate folder for anything related to the making of my horror short. i then slowly went through the clips to find the opening clip. once i figured out what went first in the arraignment i went through all the takes and picked my favourite one and colour coded the clips that i didn't like. then i went through all the clips figuring out where they had to go and which take i liked the most. every clip i added i edited the length i wanted it at before adding the next one. once i had sorted out my arrangement i got one of the tutors to watch it and took down there critiques as something to change in the online edit.

online edit

i started by finding and sinking the audio to the clips. i decided to go through the clips from the bottom to the top and listen to it before finding the right take/shot to add it to. i colour coded all the shots so i could look back and know which one was the right take and i used. whilst adding the audio i took a brake to sort out the colour correction. i had to adjust the exposure sometimes depending on the lighting. once  was done with all the audio i started looking for music to be able to add to the film. i got given some audio from a classmate and also found some free audio on youtube/Soundcloud so i mixed it all together and placed it through out the movie. i then started working on the ending and the beginning and adding the credits. once i added the credits i got help from one of the tutors to try and cover some of the tinfoil in some shots. i ended up using ai and masking it. i then had the tutor watch it and give me notes on any little things i needed to change. i finished changing them and then uploaded my video to my drive and youtube.

evaluation

editing the offline edit wasn't to bad and i found it not to difficult to edit. i went through all the clips and colour coded them so it wasn't to difficult to refined clips and know what the last one i had watched was. i learned to do this from the previous time i had edited and didn't do it. i arranged all my clips and cut them to the lengths i wanted before i started to add the audio, because of this it was extremely hard to know which audio went where and when. next time i will make sure i add the audio to the clip before i trim it so i don't have this difficulty again. trying to edit all the tinfoil and day light was difficult due to not knowing many editing techniques. however i got some help from one of my teachers and he showed me how to block out and cover the light up. i will use this new editing technique in the future in case i need it. trying to colour correct the clips wasn't to difficult however there where two clips that didn't match the other colours very well and i struggled trying to get the colours to match. in the end i wasn't able to get them to match, next time i will get help from the teachers to be able to better match the shots. i found adding the extra music not to difficult and was able to easily find some good music that fit the vibe. i also didn't struggle with figuring out the best volume for the music having some practise with it from the documentary project.
