Makeup Health and Safety

For a task in this unit we had to research the hazards and risks of applying prosthetics and make-up. The first step is asking the actor if they have any allergies, or allergies of ingredients and or make-up. We had to do this because to prevent any allergic reactions on set and to get information on details, if any changes need to be made to the makeup look, before it was too late. Telling us beforehand would decrease the risk of any reactions which we would be at fault for.

One of the earliest things we made our actor do was sign a model release form, agreeing to risk on the production, and filming. And being aware of the risks that could happen.

Making sure all the products were clean and tidy, and the working space was clean to prevent the spread of bacteria that make up brushes and sponges can hold onto. Which could easily transfer onto the actor. We made sure to wash our hands regularly, use anti-bac cleaners for the surfaces. For the brushes and sponges we gave them all a deep clean and made sure they were dry before use.

We did a patch test of liquid latex and spirit gun, using a cotton swab to apply a small amount to the arm. We asked the actor to give the product time to settle on the skin as reactions can take time to develop. A reaction could cause burning, itching and redness to the skin.

We have to be aware of covering the nose and mouth with prosthetics, as this could cause difficulty breathing especially with the access of oxygen to the airways. If these areas are covered we would have to plan the schedule carefully with breaks and the possible removal of the prothics. Another way is adding access to the airways should the original area have prosthetics around it so putting holes into the nostrils and thinner application onto the mouth or cutting an area for the mouth.

Limited vision could cause slips, falls and trips to the actor. Being aware of carefully applying to the area or in the eye, which could cause injury or permanent damage.

The application of latex and breathing in the fumes could affect the actor and cause damage internally. To help mitigate this, lids of the products should be on when not in use to prevent spillages.
